After searching for over a year, we finally found our home farm. We couldn't have done it without help from our family and friends. Pictured above is Brad parking the first piece of equipment we moved in one of the existing barns on the property. That barn hasn't been empty since!
Our business, Ten Oaks Ridge LLC, was established shortly after our farm purchase and was named after Brad's family farm growing up. Pictured above is the logo for the business, which was modeled after one of our breeding cows and the first calf born on our farm.
While we were establishing our breeding herd, we purchased 5 month old steers from a local farm for the meat production aspect of our business. Pictured above is one of the steers restrained in a cattle chute. While the animal is restrained, we can administer the proper vaccinations, deworm, and place ear tags for identification.
Our first crop at our home farm was soybeans. Pictured above is Brad standing in the soybeans in July of 2021. These soybeans were harvested in the Fall of 2021 and our horse quality hay was planted in these fields.
Our first calving season at the new farm was fairly uneventful. Everything went according to plan, except one of our seasoned cows choosing to have her calf in a torrential downpour. Pictured above is two of our calves, Gus and Wry, cuddled up in some fresh bedding. Both of these calves have been retained for our breeding herd.
Our improvements to the farm started in Brad's workshop. This barn was only partially complete when we purchased the farm and we added a concrete floor. Pictured above is Brad's workshop prepped for concrete pouring. Brad services the farm vehicles and equipment in this workshop.
Our first hay fields were planted in Fall 2021 and harvested in Summer 2022. Pictured above is our horse quality hay raked into windrows prior to baling.
Our next renovation on the farm was to add more storage for the hay we produce. Our new hay storage barn was constructed during the 2022 season and we couldn't love it more. Pictured above is the barn right after construction (we have a bit more grass surrounding the barn now!).
2022 calving Pictured above is our bull calf Hoppy and his mom Whammy.
We took the day off to get married, with our wedding taking place on our farm. Pictured above is Brad feeding before the ceremony because cattle don't take a day off.
Calving during 2023 has given us a run for our money. Most notably, two of our calves were born while we were in a feed production conference in Atlanta and Kristen's parents were watching the farm. Both calves are doing great but it may be awhile before Kristen's parents offer to watch the farm again! Pictured above is one of the 2023 calves, Wynonna.
Once a year, our cattle require vaccinations recommended by a veterinarian. We utilize the cattle chute pictured above to restrain our cattle for vaccinations.
